Krabi tourism operators urge urgent actions

Krabi tourism business operators has urged an investigation into water pollution in Ao Nang Beach, a famous tourist destination, following the cancellation of trips from Scandinavian tourists.

Ekawit Pinyotamanotai, an advisor to the province's tourism council and former chairman of the association, said that from his own inspection at Khlong Chak where treated and untreated water from all sources flow to, the water turns black and smelly. He admitted that the water once released to the seas would pollute the bay's environment.
He said that it needs to be investigated from where polluted water was released, as all hotels have their own water treatment systems.
He added that all parties need to seriously tackle pollution problems in the bay, following the declining number of Scandinavian visitors in the past few years. He attributed the declining number to degradation in the environment.
"These visitors have high purchasing power," he noted.
Local vendors near Noppharat Thara Beach, a nearby destination, also complained about the foul smell of water.
