Stranded fishermen helped home from Indonesia

Stranded fishermen helped home from Indonesia

The Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday announced that the Thai Embassy in Jakarta had recently helped bring back over 200 stranded Thai fishing boat workers.

The embassy has been working with fishing boat companies to issue identity certificates (CI) for the stranded workers – whose Thai nationality was confirmed by census information. The CIs will be used as replacements for their passports and co-ordinated with commercial flights to bring the workers home.
From April 10 to May 15, a total of 219 workers were brought back, in addition to another 300 returned between October 2014 and April 2015, officials said. Another 24 workers were yesterday on their way back to Thailand on a trip sponsored by their fishing boat company, the ministry announced.
