Supreme Court upholds 22-year prison term for six kidnappers

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a 22-year sentence handed down to six people accused of kidnapping a 36-year-old Taiwanese millionaire for Bt30 million ransom in 2009.

The Court of Appeals found the six defendants – Thai nationals Aumpon Sae-whang, Sarawuth Sae-yhang, Samut Yangying, and Chinese nationals Chen Zi Wen, Zhang Za Lun and Ching Chang – guilty of kidnapping textile entrepreneur Tle Lee Wei. It sentenced each of them a 22-year prison term.
According to witnesses, the victim was abducted by these gangsters, who claimed at the time that they police officers. They also relieved the victim of his cash, passport, bank account book and electronic devices before holding him for ransom. Following his relatives’ complaint to police, the gang was arrested and had been held in detention awaiting the appeal ever since.
