Light rail project planned in Phuket

Light rail project planned in Phuket

Phuket is close to finalise if it should welcome a light rail project to ease traffic congestion and how.

The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) and its advisor presented the plan at a meeting attended by Phuket governor, municipal officials, the business sector, and police officers.
According to the plan, the train will link Phang Nga's Thanoon district with Phuket's Chalong junction. The 60-km train project, with 20 stations, will require an investment of about Bt24 billion. The certain construction route is being finalised.
Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong asked the OTP and its advisor to work with traffic police and the municipality on the construction route, to minimise negative impacts from the project. He said the inspection should be done within 1-2 weeks.
Some attendees were worried about the impacts on commuters from the construction. Some also questioned if the train would really encourage city dwellers to change their travelling mode.
