O-Net subjects to be cut from eight to five

O-Net subjects to be cut from eight to five

The Education Ministry will cut down the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-Net) subjects from eight to just five starting from the current academic year, deputy government spokesperson Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd yesterday.

The five remaining O-Net subjects that will be used in the central admission system are mathematics, science, English, Thai and social studies, religion and culture, he said. Schools will test students on the other three subjects, namely health and physical education, occupation and technology, and arts.
This change – which will cover tests at the Prathom 6, Mathayom 3 and Mathayom 6 levels – is part of education reform with the emphasis on quality over quantity.
The move is also to cut down on stress for students so they have more time to develop other skills and hone their potential, as well as give them time for extracurricular activities or to spend time with their family, he said.
For university admission, 30 per cent of the O-Net score and 70 per cent of the high-school cumulative grade point average is used.
