Facebook marks gay rights win in US with worldwide rainbow

FACEBOOK'S timeline got started on painting a rainbow colour on users' profile photos on Saturday morning, Bangkok time. It began with co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, who painted his profile picture as a symbol showing support for marria

The tool [facebook.com/celebratepride.] was launched shortly after the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was now considered a fundamental constitutional right guaranteed under the 14th Amendment.
Apart from Zuckerberg, other tech executives also celebrated the legalisation of gay marriage on social media. Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook tweeted, “Today marks a victory for equality, perseverance and love”, while Microsoft’s chief executive officer Satya Nadella also tweeted, “A historic moment and step forward for equality in America. #LoveWins.”
Facebook’s CEO also had another two posts to show his support. First, he posted the picture of the map with the caption ‘Memberships in LGBT Facebook Group’ in 2008 and 2015. [LGBT is the acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people].
Zuckerberg also wrote on his timeline that “Our country was founded on the promise that all people are created equal, and today we took another step towards achieving that promise. I’m so happy for all of my friends and everyone in our community who can finally celebrate their love and be recognised as equal couples under the law. We still have much more to do to achieve full equality for everyone in our community, but we are moving in the right direction”.
Second, he posted “June is LGBT Pride Month – a moment to celebrate diversity and show our pride in the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to communities all over the world. Facebook is a proud supporter of Pride, and employees in many countries are taking part in events and decorating our offices to show support. “Here’s a photo of the sign at our headquarters, #PrideConnectsUs with the thumbs-up picture filtered with a rainbow on the company’s label at the front of the Facebook head office.”
In Thailand, many people filtered their profile pictures with the rainbow by using Facebook’s tools, for example: Waralee Jirachaisri, AIS’s marketing and public relations manager; Thai PBS journalist Nattha Komolvadhin; Mana Treelayapewat, dean of Communication Arts faculty; the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce; head of Content Business, Sanook Online, Jakrapong Kongmalai, and Siwat Chawareewong, an experienced digital marketer, who wrote “Love rules! Created withfacebook.com/celebratepride #LoveWINS” along with his profile picture and a rainbow filter.
YouTube Spotlight also published [on June 26, 2015] video of “#ProudToLove - Celebrating Marriage Equality and LGBT Pride Month” and wrote the description as “YouTube is #ProudToLove the LGBT community and marriage equality.
This symbol of a rainbow was immediately used for a marketing campaign by a company’s Facebook Page hashtag #lovewins. The campaign gained a lot of attention among the social media community – and ‘against’ feedback – with the hashtag #ripwalls. The company’s Facebook page posted an apology message for an unintentionally mistaken message in the campaign #lovewins.
Social media allows people around the world to immediately participate in global incidents at the same moment whatever they may be, tragedy or celebration.
