Bang Saen hit by plankton blooms

Bang Saen hit by plankton blooms

Chon Buri, the Bang Saen sea has been hit by the plankton blooms phenomenon, suffocating a lot of small fish that was found on the popular Bang Saen Beach Monday morning.

At 7 am Monday, many local residents turned up at the beach to collect fish large enough for cooking along the five-kilometre-long beach. Many were seen leaving the beach with several kgs of fish in plastic bags.
By 10 am, the Saen Suk Municipality sent officials to collect the remaining fish for disposal.
The phenomenon turned the seawater into deep green.
A local resident, who identified himself as Sompong, 60, told Khaosod that the phenomenon happened every year.
Dr Saowapha Sawatphira, director of the Institute of Marine Science of Burapha University, told Khao Sod that there were heavy downpours in Bang Saeng last week and the rainwater caused the phytoplankton to multiply under the right temperature of the sea and saline level, leading the plankton blooms.
