Lam Luk Ka residents among those short of water

Lam Luk Ka residents among those short of water

ON FRIDAY, faucets in some parts of Pathum Thani's Lam Luk Ka district dried up.

This is not about a minor hiccup. The drought in much of the country is getting so serious that tap water services have already started to falter in many areas.
Lam Luk Ka is only about an hour’s drive away from Bangkok and the heart of Thailand’s economy.
Suwunrat Chumsuk said yesterday that her Cha Fong Beer coffee shop and other houses in Ban Fa Piyarom Village in the district have had no running water for two days now.
“This is a very difficult time for us as my coffee shop needs lots of water every day. Luckily, it’s at |the head end of the water main, so we get some from time to time.
“We try to keep the business going by using as little as possible and storing water in a tank when it flows,” she said.
She said she understands that the water shortage is due to the drought and does not blame the authorities for the natural calamity.
Everyone should use water wisely during this trying time, she said.
Sittikiat Janevanich, president of the Bueng Kumproy Tambon Administrative Organisation, said about 3,000-4,000 households or 15 per cent of the population in the area have suffered from the severe drought and it could go up to 100 per cent if the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority cuts off the water.
At this early stage, local administrative bodies can still supply some to the community but not enough to cover agriculture, he said.
