Small quake cracks buildings, dams safe

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake, which occurred in Kanchanaburi's Sangkha Buri district on Tuesday night, had no impact on two major dams, a senior official said yesterday.

Wachiralongkorn Dam director Prasert Thamrongwisawa said the quake, which struck at 9.25pm on Tuesday, had no impact on the two dams although its epicentre was 27.21 kilometres northeast of the dam and 97.15km northwest of the Srinagarind Dam. The Kanchanaburi Disaster Warning Centre said the quake’s epicentre was 4km below the earth’s surface.
The quake caused slight damage to several houses. Public Health Ministry deputy permanent secretary Surachet Satitramai ordered engineers to inspect Sangha Buri Hospital’s structure. They found some small cracks in the building.
The hospital operated as normal though some patients were moved to Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital.
Surachet urged Sangha Buri Hospital as well as Thong Pha Phum, Tha Kradan and Suk Siri Si Sawat hospitals – which are located on the Srisawat fault line – to be alert.
