PurpleMySchool campaign launched

PurpleMySchool campaign launched

The PurpleMySchool campaign has been launched ahead of the International Youth Day on August 12, aimed at creating safe spaces for LGBTI youth in educational settings throughout the region.

Unesco Bangkok, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Being LGBTI in Asia encourage parents, peers and teachers to join the campaign as many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) youth in the region experience dread walking through their schools’ doors.
Participants are invited to show LGBTI youth that they can feel safe in their classrooms and schools by wearing, drawing or making something purple and then submitting their photos to www.campaign.com/PurpleMySchool or by using the hashtag #PurpleMySchool on social media. The #PurpleMySchool campaign aims to improve the lives of LGBTI learners throughout Asia-Pacific, with the website available in English as well as other languages.
The #PurpleMySchool campaign will run until International Human Rights Day, December 10. The top photos among those submitted will then be selected for a new publication about bullying on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression to be launched by Unesco, UNDP and Being LGBTI in Asia. All contributors will receive a copy of this publication, which will be distributed at next year’s International Meeting of Ministers of Education: Education Sector Responses to Homophobic Violence in Paris.
The #PurpleMySchool campaign is being supported by the government of the Netherlands, the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok and USAID Regional Development Mission Asia.
