Use of 'sin tax' to be investigated

DEPUTY PRIME Minister Yongyuth Yutthawong said yesterday he had backed a watchdog committee's decision to investigate the funding of three public organisations that get money from the "sin tax" on alcohol and cigarettes.

Yongyuth was referring to the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), Thai Public Broadcasting Service and the National Sport Development Funding Office, which have been given full use of funds from the “sin tax” without going through the bureaucracy.
Yongyuth said ThaiHealth confirmed that the watchdog would inspect its spending, and this was welcome – as use of the tax funds should be monitored.
