Probe into encroachment on sea-gypsies' cemeteries in Koh Lanta

Probe into encroachment on sea-gypsies' cemeteries in Koh Lanta

The PM's Office Committee, which has been assigned to help the sea-gypsy community get land and housing security, went to inspect four sea-gypsy cemeteries in Krabi's Koh Lanta district yesterday following complaints that the community was facing eviction

Committee chairman General Surin Pikulthong, who led the visit yesterday, said the land dispute stemmed from cemeteries having unclear boundaries and some investors intruding on the cemeteries by five to 10 metres.
District land officials and other agencies have inspected the site, done a boundary survey, pinned territory markers, and put up signs about the cemeteries to prevent further encroachment, he said.
As for alleged intrusion, related agencies are checking on the land-right documents to determine their legitimacy. He said a resolution should be made in seven days and tabled at the committee’s next meeting.
