Thai air force buys trainer jets from South Korea

Bangkok (dpa) - The Royal Thai Air Force will purchase four T-50 trainer jets from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), officials said Friday.

The planes will be delivered over the next 30 months and cost around110 million dollars, a senior air force official told dpa on condition of anonymity.
The contract was signed on Thursday, KAI said online.
The Thai military have a further option to purchase 20 more T-50 jets in the future.
The plane was chosen over Chinese L-15 trainers, the official told dpa.
The T-50 is a supersonic trainer that can double as a light attack aircraft. The plane will be used to train pilots for the existing fleet of Swedish-made JAS 39 Gripens and US-made F16 Fighting Falcons.
