Rubber farmers want subsidy

Rubber farmers want subsidy

Rubber farmers, suffering from the slumping rubber price, want the government to approve a rubber-subsidy project to ensure the price would be at Bt60 per kilogram, Sunthorn Rakrong, leader of the country's rubber growers' networks, said yesterday.

Sunthorn led a group of farmers to file a petition with the public complaints centre at the PM’s Office’s Permanent Secretary’s Office yesterday morning.
The group also wanted the government to approve the rubber farmers’ proposal to let them trade rubber produce with rice grains and to establish a screening committee for the project to reclaim forestland by cutting down rubber trees, in accordance to the National Council for Peace and Order’s order number 66/2557.
He said they would soon have representatives request a meeting with the prime minister to discuss the three demands.
Sunthorn said the farmers are not planning a protest rally yet because they had already made symbolic protest signs at city halls in Phatthalung and Surat Thani provinces and it would soon expand to Ranong and Songkhla too.
