Cambridge recommendations presented

The Education Ministry is looking at implementing a guideline from the recent Cambridge University-led curriculum analysis and overview of Thai education reform to arrange and improve the teaching of science and maths for Thai students.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Teerakiat Jareonsettasin said the analysis on basic education core curriculum, teaching reform, school measurement and Thai agencies’ assessments had been carried out by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) officials and public and private sector personnel since March. The results were presented in a meeting on Wednesday.
He said Cambridge experts also suggested that education reform should be based on the country’s context and needs effective integration of education management agencies in order to succeed.
“The CIE team viewed that Thai education reform should consider the curriculum, management of teaching and learning in classrooms, as well as assessments. Students don’t need to study too much but they have to have in-depth and thorough knowledge, while they should also know where to do more additional research. The education management should be appropriate to the students’ age while academic assessment should take place right after lessons, so teachers will know how much the pupils understand and learn from it.” Teerakiat said.
In regard to the teaching of science and mathematics, the meeting on Wednesday resolved to review the two subjects’ teaching and learning standard to ensure they are more in line with the adjustment of basic education core curriculum, which was being done by the Office of the Basic Education Commission, he said. The Institute for the promotion of Teaching Science and Technology, which was in charge of the two subjects, would set the subjects’ framework to be more intensive and diverse, he said. – Ketkan Boonpen, The Nation
