Japan predicts record tourist spending

Tokyo (dpa) - Spending by overseas tourists to Japan was expected to exceed 3 trillion yen (US$25 billion) for the first time in 2015, a report said Thursday.

Foreign visitors spent 2.59 trillion yen in the first nine months of 2015, Nikkei business daily reported, citing Japan Tourism Agency officials. The figure soared 77 per cent from the same period a year earlier and as already more than the 2-trillion-yen record buying spree for the previous year, the report said.
"We expect consumption (by tourists) to exceed 3 trillion yen this year," the agency's commissioner, Akihiko Tamura, told a news conference Wednesday.
The influx of Chinese tourists has become a familiar sight on the streets of Tokyo's fashionable Ginza district. Their spending spree has been in stark contrast to sluggish domestic consumption.
The number of foreign visitors to Japan rose 47 per cent from a year earlier to 1.61 million in September, the Japan National Tourism Organisation said Wednesday. The Japan Tourism Agency said more than 15 million tourists had arrived in 2015 as of October 9, surpassing the 13.4 million in 2014. The number may reach 20 million by the end of the year, the Nikkei said.
