EU observers lauds Myanmar election

Yangon - European Union's election observation mission announced today that they are satisfied with the November 8 elections, despite the lack of transparency in advance voting.

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, EU chief observer, said that the poll was well-organised and voters had a real choice between different candidates. In an effort to observe what is happening on the ground, 150 EU observers went to more than 500 polling stations. The observers found out that the elections were better than what they had expected.
Lambsdorff however stressed the lack of transparency in advance voting.
“The process for advance voting was not well-managed. We were not given
access to out of constituency advance voting in military barracks, despite prior assurances,” he said.
He said that 95 per cent of the observers rated the polls as “good” but in 7 per cent of the poling stations they visited, some voters could not have a chance to vote, as their names were not mentioned in the voting list.
