CDC sticks to MMA

The Constitution Drafting Commission is working to prevent an "overhang" of MPs while sticking firmly to the proposed mixed-member apportionment and single-ballot electoral system despite criticism, its spokesman Norachit Sinhaseni said yesterday.

The CDC subcommittee studying legislative structures proposed voting calculation methods to the CDC yesterday but Norachit refused to reveal any details, saying drafters are still discussing the matter and no resolution had been reached. He reiterated that the proposed electoral system and the MP voting calculation should be fair to every party. They should gain parliamentary seats proportional to their popularity reflected by the calculated votes, he explained. As for the CDC’s work on independent agencies, Norachit said the drafters were still discussing the matter and on Tuesday had deliberated on the term of the National Anti-Corruption Commission without reaching a resolution. The CDC had also started looking at the Auditor General, the spokesman said, including the term of service, qualifications and authority.
However, there had not been clarity and CDC was still debating the matter, he said, adding that he would tell the press when agreements had been reached on the highlighted matters.
