Big waves cause havoc in the South

Big waves cause havoc in the South

STRONG winds and three-metre-high waves this week eroded a 100-metre section of the Pak Phanang-Hua Sai Road in Nakhon Si Thammarat's Pak Phanang district, and affected local residents.

Two families that live near the road were evacuated as a precaution after their homes in Tambon Tha Phraya’s Moo 2 village were severely damaged.
Fisherman Prachuap Chorpook, 53, used to live in the area along with 10 other neighbours but waves during the wet season forced most families, including his, to relocate. This has left just two families in the area. “The house and land that I’m rightfully entitled to was consumed by the sea, while state agencies come [to inspect the damages] and go like the waves every year,” Prachuap said. “Affected residents never get remedial measures for this trouble.”
In related news, 20 families in two seaside villages in Tambon Khok Khian in Narathiwat’s Muang district were also affected by big surf on Friday night.
Several homes were flooded and families had to seek refuge at their relatives’ homes. Sections of a two-kilometre-long beachside road were under sand and rocks.
