Charter court unnecessary: expert

Charter court unnecessary: expert

Kanin Boonsuwan, a constitutional expert, said Sunday that Thailand does not need the Constitutional Court.

He said that such court is necessary for federal states like Germany, France, Austria and South Korea, to ensure that state laws do not contradict the federal laws.
He added that it is time the Constitution Drafting Committee chaired by Meechai Ruchupan review if such court is necessary.
The previous charter drafting committee proposed more power for the court, believing that it would clear the country's hurdles.
Kanin rebuked that the court's nonprudent decisions could instead cause conflicts, as witnessed during the time when the 2007 Constitution was in force. He neither believed that the court's existence would prevent another military coup.
