Dr Saisuree Chutikul wins Asean Peoples’ Award
The Asean Secretariat has announced that former PM’s Office minister Dr Saisuree Chutikul has been named the Thai recipient of the Asean Peoples’ Award.
The announcement explained that Saisuree won the award because she has been responsible for many ground-breaking social policies both in her country and for the region.
“Among others, she chaired and coordinated the ASEAN-Working Group and Thai Working Group in developing the ASEAN regional plans of action on elimination of violence against women and children,” the statement from Asean Secretariat said.
“At present, she serves on various National Committees: Combating Human Trafficking; Women’s Affairs; Children’s and Youth’s Affairs. She is the Thai Representative on Children’s Rights to the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children [ACWC].”
Saisuree was PM’s Office minister for the Anand I and II governments after the 1991 coup. She was credited for pushing for the change of regulations that allowed women to take three-month maternity leave.
