Reform panel proposes axing partylist MPs, but academic doubts CDC will back plan

THE political reform panel under the National Reform Steering Assembly (NSRA) proposed Monday that party-list MPs be cut from politics to prevent influence from financiers.

Panel chairman Seri Suwanpanont met Monday with the Constitution Drafting Commission to submit the plan for consideration and inclusion in the new charter.
The Lower House of Parliament, he said, should be made up of constituency MPs only, elected from large wards under singlemember districts. That would, in theory, make votebuying more difficult.
The partylist system should be dropped because lists were often filled with greedy people who invest to enter politics and seek to profit, he said.
