Don meets fishing operators

FOREIGN MINISTER Don Pramudwinai yesterday met with operators in the fishery sector to brainstorm for guidelines to combat human-trafficking crimes as per European Union (EU) rules on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The meeting with representatives from the private sector, civil society and relevant agencies, held at the Foreign Ministry on Bangkok’s Si Ayudhya Road, was to confirm that joint efforts to combat human trafficking and IUU fishing have continued. Participating private-sector groups included the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Frozen Food Association, the Thai Shrimp Association and the Thai Tuna Industry Association.
After the meeting, Don said all sides had given useful opinions. He affirmed that the government was seriously tackling the problem, including amending laws and formulating plans to create good-practice standards and said the results so far were satisfactory.
He blamed a few “black sheep” for the alleged use of forced labour in the Thai seafood industry.
Don said the Thai government and relevant parties were solving the problem so that the use of labour would be on par with international standards. He believed it would eventually help reduce the number of “black sheep” in the industry and added that they would not affect the US “Trafficking in Persons” ranking or the EU’s IUU fishing assessment.
