Hunters nabbed for killing protected animals

Nine hunters were arrested on Wednesday afternoon following the discovery of gaur and other wildlife carcasses in a forest reserve in Chumphon’s Phato district, according to district chief Sompol Pholsomboonchok.

They are facing several charges including hunting in a wildlife sanctuary for protected animals, possessing wildlife carcasses and possessing guns without permission.
Sompol said the gang of hunters had apparently been preying on wildlife in the Phato forest throughout November and December as well. He said the recently discovered guar carcass was the second one killed by group.
The first carcass found had spurred the district office to coordinated with the Kuan Mae Yai Mon Wildlife Sanctuary, Phato police and Ranongbased Rattanarangsan Camp’s soldiers to hunt for the gang. The nine hunters were captured while riding in a boat laden with their guns and the wildlife carcasses.
