New parking lot planned to ease

THE GOVERNMENT has come up with the idea of building a parking lot at the riverside Nagaraphirom Park to tackle traffic congestion around Bangkok’s Rattanakosin Island, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said yesterday.

After presiding over a meeting with the Committee for Krung Rattanakosin and Old Towns Conservation and Development, Prawit said they had agreed in principle to go ahead with the construction of a 700-vehicle parking lot at the park and that it will soon be proposed to the Cabinet for consideration.
He said it was yet to determined where the funds for this project would come from and how much would be needed. Prawit added that measures to regulate traffic on the island had already been implemented, including getting big tour buses to park at the new Southern Bus Terminal. City administration officials and police are looking for parking places for chartered vans and other vehicles, which are parking randomly in the Sri Ayudhya Road area.
