Myanmar frees 101 prison inmates in amnesty

Yangon - Outgoing Myanmar President Thein Sein has ordered the release of 101 prison inmates including about two dozen political prisoners, officials said Friday.

"One hundred and one prisoners will be released today from prisons across the country," under an amnesty, presidential chief of staff Zaw Htay said.
He also said the death sentences of 77 other inmates were commuted to life in prison.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said 25 political prisoners were freed including New Zealander Philip Blackwood, who was jailed in March for offences against religion.
Most political prisoners had already been released as part of the reform process under Thein Sein's administration since 2011.
