Thai police to let aviation experts inspect ‘wreckage’

BANGKOK: Authorities in the southern Thailand district of Pak Phanang will enlist aviation experts to inspect the suspected “wreckage” of a plane found off the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Police Sub Lt It Paijit Pongkaew said the suspected wreckage would be brought to the district police station for the experts from the aviation sector and the country’s air force to inspect it.

“We are in the process of contacting the relevant authorities, especially from the aviation sector and also the air force, to enable them to better inspect the suspected wreckage of the plane,” he told Bernama here via telephone from Pak Phanang, Sunday.

The found wreckage, he said, had been placed at the sub-district chief's house in Pak Phanang for security reason before the authority moved it to the police station.

On Saturday, local villagers living off the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand, reported the discovery of a large metal object, measuring two metres wide and three metres long, suspected to originate from a plane.

The find, off the coast of southern Thailand, has prompted the country’s media to speculate that the suspected plane wreckage might be related to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which disappeared during a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing two years ago.

The flight carried 239 passengers on board.

According to It Paijit, despite the found debris resembling an aircraft part, he could not conclusively say with certainty without obtaining advice from the experts.

“It (the suspected wreckage) looks like from an aircraft, but let the experts examine the object first,” he said, adding that the process of transporting the suspected wreckage to the district’s police station could take two hours. – Bernama
