Obec to review school head’s apology to student

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) has set up a panel to study the case of Bangkok’s Debsirin School director Anan Subwaree, who got on his knees to apologise to a high school student last week.

Obec wants to prevent similar events in the future, its secretary general Karun Sakulpradit said yesterday. Karun said the issue was discussed at a meeting yesterday and it was agreed that the school director’s action was inappropriate and might affect 30,000 other schools or cause students to think they could copy the defiance allegedly shown by the high school student involved. “I understand Anan wants to end the conflict by himself but his over-exuberance was not appropriate. There are many other ways that could be handled. As a school executive, one should know and use leadership methods that still gain students’ respect,” Karun said. The committee will also study how to promote student discipline and get teachers and student councils to help to tackle the issue. Meanwhile, Anan affirmed the case had ended as the student in question apologised on January 22. He assigned his deputy to explain what had happened to other students later yesterday. He said he was ready to cooperate with the panel probing the incident. A group of 20 alumni and parents gave a floral basket to boost Anan’s morale.
