Another FB users nabbed in Myanmar

YANGON - Owner of the Facebook account ‘Kyat Pha Gyi’ has been arrested by the police for doctoring images of President Thein Sein and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The accused was identified as sailor Hla Bhone, 38, from Mayangone Township. He allegedly posted manipulated pictures that depicted the senior general wearing a sarong as a turban, Thein Sein putting on footwear for the general as well as other personal attacks.

The case against Hla Bhone under the Electronic Communications Law Section 66(d) was opened by the Yangon military command. The investigation was conducted by the military before the police were asked to arrest him.

“According to his passport, he is a sailor making frequent overseas trips. We have confiscated his computer and are investigating the claims,” said Deputy Superintendent Zaw Htun.

However, it has been reported that while Hla Bhone was detained, the controversial ‘Kyat Pha Gyi’ account was found to be active, although the supposed owner is in prison.

The recent string of arrests and investigations regarding those who infringe the communications law have received much criticism from the public as only cases involving the military have produced real results so far.

A recent example is the Facebook post by "Ye Lwin Myint" which threatened to kill the chairperson of the National League of Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi. Despite requests for the police to take action after a death threat against one of the world's most prominent political figures, the authorities refused to take action because no one opened a case against him.

There have been calls for police actions on the postings by ‘’Seik Phwar’’, “Myat Maw”, “Swe Yu” and Neo “Seik Phwar” but no action was taken.
