Cultural artworks on auction

Cultural artworks on auction

A charming scene of two ladies in traditional Thai dress fishing along a canal is depicted in the late National Artist Payad Pongdam's masterpiece “The Fishing Girls”.

The rare artwork is among 11 masterpieces created by six national artists that go under the hammer this afternoon at the “Cultural Market: Siamese Smiles” fair held on the banks of Khlong Phadung Krungkasem near Government House on Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue. Prices start between Bt4,000 and Bt200,000.
The late Prayad created the woodcut print in 2008, six years before he died. The bidding for the masterpiece starts at Bt200,000. Decha Warachun’s abstract print “Memorial 6” has the cheapest starting price of Bt4,000. Other works include paintings, prints and mixed media works by Preecha Thaothong, Panya Vijinthanasarn, Thongchai Rakpathum and Vichoke Mukdamanee. All proceeds from the sale will go to the artists who own the copyrights.
The auction wraps up the one-month cultural fair held by the Ministry of Culture to promote Thai arts and crafts to contribute to the economy. Aiming at both Thais and foreigners, the project is in line with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s policy to convert the alley near Parliament into a community market of arts and crafts from across the country as well as a venue for live performances by local artists.
