Chinese stocks rise, reassured by central bank chief
HONG KONG - Shanghai stocks rose Friday, recovering from heavy losses the previous day as China's central bank chief tried to soothe worries over the weak economy and the depreciation of the yuan currency.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index added 0.43 per cent, or 11.84 points, to 2,753.09.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index added 1.63 per cent, or 308.39 points, to 19,197.14.
But the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, edged down 1.29 points, to 1,737.38.
