Prawit says stage set for crackdown on underworld

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said yesterday that the taskforce charged with identifying underworld figures had finished its task and would launch a nationwide crackdown from tomorrow.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on October 29 had assigned him to head the committee and show results within six months. It began working in November.
Anyone found to have broken the law would be punished accordingly, he said.
National police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda, a member of Prawit’s panel, said police had already summoned suspected influential figures for questioning and for hearing charges against them from the 16 related charges spelled out in their old arrest warrants.
Collusion on government bids was the most frequently cited offence in Uthai Thani, while in popular tourist destinations like Pattaya and Phuket, police would continue to crack down on those preying on visitors, he said.
