Thai women’s spikers invited to play in Montreux Masters

Thailand women's volleyball team, currently world No.13 and bronze medallists at the last year's Asian Championship, have been invited for the first time to play in the top-flight Montreux Volleyball Masters in Switzerland between May 31 and June 5.

Eight teams including six with world ranking among top 15 have been divided to two pools of four teams to contest the pool round-robin preliminaries.

Pool A comprises World Cup champions China, defending Montreux Masters champions Turkey, up-and-coming Belgium and Brazil U23 team, which captured the last year's world title, while hosts Switzerland, World Cup runners-up Serbia, European runners-up Netherlands and the two-time Asian winners Thailand are in Pool B.

Only top two teams from each pool will make the cut for the semi-finals, with the two winning teams setting up the final showdown on June 5.

Thailand, now training intensively for the FIVB World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan from May 14 to 22, will open their campaign against Serbia on June 1. The Thai team will next go up against the Netherlands on June 2 and Switzerland the following day.

After the conclusion of the Montreux Masters on June 5, the Thai women's spikers will have only four days left ahead of their daunting task in the FIVB World Grand Prix, which they will challenge hosts China in their first leg in Ningbo on June 10.
