Suu Kyi named third 'greatest' leader

YANGON - Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD), stands third place in Fortune Magazine’s list of the world's 50 greatest leaders.

Fortune Magazine is a multinational business magazine based in New York and founded in 1930. The list, already published online, will appear in the April 1 issue of the magazine.
Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO, tops the list and German Chancellor Angela Merkel followed him. Suu Kyi stands in third place followed by Pope Francis and Apple’s CEO Tim Cook.
Fortune Magazine stated that Suu Kyi, daughter of General Aung San, independence leader, led the country from military dictatorship to democracy after the junta subjected her to house arrest for nearly 20 years.
She won a Nobel peace prize in 1991 and last year's general election.
While rules imposed by the junta kept her from personally running for president, she chose Htin Kyaw, a friend and former aide, to lead the government.
Tun Tun Hein, an executive member of the NLD, said: “Our party is proud. Our leader is deserved to be in third place. She will lead the country as a minister and a party leader.”
Suu Kyi is included in the cabinet ministerial list approved by Parliament and some sources say she will take over the ministries of Foreign Affairs, President’s Office, Education and Electric Power and Energy.
