Over 300kg of elephant tusks found at Suvarnabhumi Airport

SOME 87 elephant tusks smuggled into Thailand from Kenya have been seized, Customs Department chief Kulit Sombatsiri said yesterday.

The ivory, weighing 315 kilograms and allegedly worth Bt28 million, was found amid a cargo declared as uncut stone from Mozambique transported through Kenya to Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The intended recipient was identified as a Guinean man named Sato Morie, who has already left Thailand after learning about the seizure.
Kulit said there were 22 boxes in the batch but not all of it could be loaded on to the plane, so 10 boxes were left in Kenya. He said Customs had alerted authorities in the east African state and they had impounded another 70kg.
Thailand is one of eight countries heavily targeted by wildlife smugglers, which has prompted officials here to set up guidelines requiring that cargo from 27 African countries be X-rayed to prevent smuggling, a source reported.
