France to introduce fines for people caught paying for sex

Paris - People caught paying for sex in France are to face fines of up to 1,500 euros (1,714 dollars), France's lower house of parliament agreed on Wednesday.

Repeat offenders are to be fined up to 3,750 euros, the National Assembly decided following years of debate over the country's prostitution laws.
The decision to fine customers instead of sex workers brings French law in line with Sweden and Norway.
Sex workers are no longer to be fined for accepting offers from customers, which was previously punished in France.
Minister for Women's Rights Laurence Rossignol said sexual commerce was a violation of human dignity.
Sex worker organisations criticised the plans, saying that increased punishment of paid sex would only make prostitution more dangerous.
