Police officer: I shot dogs to save my wife

A police inspector who shot dead one dog and seriously injured another on Friday night in Bangkok claimed he did it to protect his pregnant wife, who was surrounded and about to be mauled by a group of dogs.

Pol Major Wasawat Sukthai yesterday morning turned himself in at the Paholyothin Police Station and made a statement. Police filed three charges against him: violation of the Prevention of Animal Cruelty and Provision of Animal Welfare Act, which is punishable with a fine of up to Bt40,000 and two years in prison; a Criminal Code violation for carrying a gun into a public place without sound reason; and firing a gun in a public place without sound reason.
