Thai car sales in March declines 2%

A number of 72,646 vehicles were sold in March, representing a decline of 2 per cent from the same period a year earlier, according to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand.

Sales declined mainly due to the 21.2 per cent decrease in passenger car sales to 23,763 units.
Meanwhile, commercial vehicle sales rose 11.2 per cent, an increase for two months in a row. In this segment, one-tonne pickup truck sales rose 16.5 per cent to 38,915 units, thanks to the launch of new models.
The household debt, sustained at a high level, was cited as a major reason that dented demand in the month.
Car sales in the first three months of this year were at 181,560 units, down by 8.2 per cent from the same period a year ago.
Toyota expected the market condition to remain subdued in April.
"Despite low interest rates and the government's policy to boost public investment disbursement as well as quicken infrastructure investment, the global economic condition remains volatile. Coupled with drought that hit crop prices, this would keep pressure on affordability," it said.
