Bones found in 20 Udon Thani sites confirmed to be human

The bones retrieved from 20 of the 23 sites in a degraded forest area in Udon Thani’s Ban Phue district last week are human, the director of the Institute of Forensic Medicine said yesterday.

Pol Maj-General Pornchai Suteerakune added that forensic police would collect DNA samples from the relatives of 18 people reported missing to see if they might be among the victims.
This would take time, he said, as there are many separate bones at the sites. He also admitted that the condition of old and burnt bones might hamper the effort to compare DNA, but he said the forensic work would be done as fast as possible because the news had received a lot of public attention.
Udon Thani police are prepared to re-open at least two missing persons cases that they believe might be linked to the sites. Those cases are the abduction and murder case of Kularp Insri, 48, in 2010, in which a suspect confessed to the murder but the body was never found; and the abduction and murder of moneylender Bung-on Thong-on in 2014, a case in which no suspect has been identified.
