Forum opposes Chao Phraya promenade project

Forum opposes Chao Phraya promenade project

The non-profit organisation, Friends of the River (FOR), and the Association of Siamese Architects jointly hosted a public forum yesterday to seek opinions on the drafting of the Chao Phraya River sustainable development plan.

The plan will be submitted to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Health Assembly.
The “River’s Voice” forum was held at Impact Muang Thong Thani’s Challenger Hall and was attended by some 200 people including riverside residents and business operators.
Attendees called for the cancellation of the proposed Chao Phraya For All promenade project.
Land architect and FOR co-founder Yossapon Boonsom said the study for the project would be conducted over seven months, so it was unlikely it would yield a good project implementation.
He said given the Chao Phraya River was for everyone, a project such as the promenade must require the participation and input of varying voices including affected communities.
He said the BMA should arrange a process where all sides could jointly set a direction for the river’s development so there would be an alternative to the master plan that would be acceptable to society before the design and construction began.
