NLD MP to be penalised for unauthorised meet with Wa leader

NLD MP to be penalised for unauthorised meet with Wa leader

YANGON - Lower House MP Soe Htay, a member of the National League for Democracy, said that he would be penalised for meeting with the leaders of United Wa State Party/ United Wa Stat Army without informing the party in advance.

Soe Htay is a member of the Ethnic Affairs and Peacemaking Committee in the Lower House. He visited the Wa region from April 25 to 29 in order to collect data for peacemaking. During the trip, he met and discussed with the Wa team led by the vice-chairperson of UWSA on April 28 in Pangsang. Soe Htay invited the leaders of UWSA to attend the 21st Century Panglong Conference, which Aung San Suu Kyi is likely to hold.
Soe Htay said: “I reported about the trip both to the parliament and the party. However, since I didn’t inform them in advance, I was told that I will be penalised.”
NLD Central Executive Committee member Win Htein said the NLD did not send representative to meet the UWSA on April 29.
The UWSA is an ethnic armed group that has not signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement. During the previous government administration, the UWSA announced that it would not sign the NCA since they already have a ceasefire agreement with the government. The group is reportedly happy with the new government, whom they met at the beginning of the government’s term to discuss the group’s policy recommendations.
