Bring well-being to the people: Big Jiew

FORMER prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh yesterday called on those in power to focus on getting rid of poverty and ensuring the well-being of people.

He said people’s well-being should be the top priority for any government, even higher than the country’s top law, the constitution.
“We have to pay more attention to the economy and the well-being of the people. The most important thing is that people must be economically sound so that they can survive,” Chavalit said.
“I wonder why people are so interested with the draft constitution. Is it just because it is the country’s top law? It’s fine if more constitutions can bring better well-being. But we’ve had many constitutions and there have been no improvements.”
The former commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army was speaking at his house while celebrating his birthday with a large group of well-wishers. He turns 84 tomorrow.
The ex-prime minister said he still believed in Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. “He is trying to solve the problems and there are many good people around him,” Chavalit said.
“For me, it’s fine if our rights and liberties are restricted 10 times more than is the case now, as long as people enjoy well-being,” he said.
