NCPO sacks ONESQA chief over lack of results

NCPO sacks ONESQA chief over lack of results

THE NATIONAL COUNCIL for Peace and Order (NCPO) has suspended director of Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (ONESQA) Channarong Pornrungroj from duty, as the agency has yielded no results for several years, leading to the loss

The minister admitted the ministry had reported that ONESQA had operational issues and faced resistance from assessed institutes over “imaginable reasons”.
The order was issued under the interim charter’s Article 44 on Monday with immediate effect and Channarong said he accepted it as his supervisors had made the decision based on facts. He said he was not worried about the fourth round of assessment as the system was set to move forward and the four committees involved had high-calibre experts.
Acting ONESQA director Kormsorn Wongraksa said the agency’s work would proceed uninterrupted and be based on the government’s road map. As for the order suspending the upcoming assessment for two years to review indexes and improve ONESQA’s operations, he said the index review had progressed and it might be submitted to the government ahead of deadline. Dapong said the assessment should provide practical solutions, but ONESQA had not resulted in any concrete results for years and had caused the loss of opportunities and funds.
Chulalongkorn University president Bundhit Eua-arporn said the internal and external quality assurances should be up to standard, accepted at national and international levels, and methods applied as appropriate to Thai society and individual universities.
