UDD provides new evidence over 2010 crackdown
The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) yesterday called on the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to review its decision to drop the case against those responsible for the bloody crackdown on red-shirt protesters in 2010.
The NACC last year dismissed charges of malfeasance against former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, his then-deputy Suthep Thaugsuban and ex-Army chief General Anupong Paochinda in connection with the crackdown.
Members of the UDD, led by Thida Thavornseth, as well as those who lost their family members during the crackdown filed a complaint with the NACC and submitted additional evidence. They said this evidence should be studied and the decision to drop the case reconsidered.
Thida claimed that she submitted an Army publication called "Senathipat" as part of the new evidence, and it provided details of the dispersal operation that was said to have been upgraded into a full military manoeuvre with war weapons. Also, she said, there was evidence that a subsequent court ruling indicated that unarmed citizens were killed by military officers.
Another evidence is a CD entitled “Spraying Bullets at Birds in a Cage”, which provides information from a military colonel who found the dispersal operation unacceptable, she said.
She went on to say that yesterday marked the 6th anniversary of the May 19 crackdown, yet so far nobody has taken responsibility for the death of the 99 victims. This is despite the fact that the crackdown has been questioned by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the United Nations Human Rights Council, she pointed out.
