Myanmar’s mountaineers conquer Everest

Two mountaineers from Myanmar have successfully scaled Mount Everest for the first time ever.

The Facebook pages for the “Myanmar Flag on Everest” expedition and the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services confirmed and congratulated that Pyae Phyo Aung and Win Ko Ko reached the peak at 7am on May 19.

A third climber, Nyi Nyi Aung, had to stay behind because his blood oxygen levels fell to a life-threatening 57 per cent.

“Both me and his mother could not sleep. She was reciting mantras all night. They were 45 minutes late when Doe Lone from the base camp let us know. I cried with joy and just as soon I started worrying about their trip back down the mountain. We can only relax when they return to the base camp,” said Khin Thuzar Kyaw, wife of Win Ko Ko.

The group, sponsored by the Htoo Foundation, left Myanmar on March 26.
