Government thanks UN appreciation over decision

The government yesterday thanked the United Nations Human Rights Office for Southeast Asia for welcoming Thailand’s decision to enact a law to criminalise torture and enforced disappearances, and to ratify the International Convention for the Protection o

Government spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the government was sincere wanting to protect people’s human rights equally.
“All law violators also are treated properly. We do not use violence or torture. We take no actions that go against the law or international principles on human rights. Scrutiny can be done by domestic and international agencies at any time,” the spokesman said.
He also said that although this post-coup government was not elected, it would never resort to unlawful means and would not allow anyone to stand above the law.
He asked how this compared to an elected government that abused its power by condoning the extrajudicial killings of scores of suspected drug dealers.
Last week, OHCHR’s acting regional representative Laurent Meillan hailed the government’s decision as a positive step towards meeting international human rights standards.
He noted that there had been no accountability for cases of enforced disappearances in Thailand for too long.
