MH370 search to conclude in July or August amid rough seas

Sydney - The search for missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 is expected to draw to an end in July or August, officials said Wednesday, as the southern winter is set to slow its final stages.

"Winter weather conditions continue to bring rough seas and strong winds to the search area, impacting on operations," the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said in a weekly update.
One wave was measured at more than 18 metres, it said.
One ship has been on standby north of the search area, while the other has been unable to undertake deep tow search activities for the past three weeks, the centre said.
"It is now anticipated it may take until around July/August to complete the 120,000 square kilometres, but this will be influenced by weather conditions over the winter months."
The JACC earlier said the search was expected to end mid-year. The Beijing-bound flight disappeared with 239 passengers and crew onboard, shortly after taking off en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014.
More than 105,000 square kilometres of the ocean floor have been scoured in the most extensive search in aviation history.
The governments of Malaysia, Australia, and China, who have spent close to 150 million dollars, have agreed not to extend the search beyond the initially agreed 120,000-sq-km area.
Five pieces of debris from MH370 have been discovered in South Africa, Mozambique, Mauritius and Reunion Island.
