Teen, 19, charged with murdering lover, 58

A 19-YEAR-OLD man has confessed to murdering his 58-year-old lover on Sunday and burning his body in Bangkok’s Prawet district to conceal the crime, acting metropolitan police commissioner Lt-General Sanit Mahathaworn told a press conference yesterday.

Following his arrest at the compound of Wat Kaew Pitak Charoentham, Patphum Yaemkhong, a former temple boy with a Prathom 3 education, claimed he had been pressured by the victim Sompong Boonyeun during their three-week relationship, according to police.
Patphum was captured on CCTV footage taking a large luggage bag, allegedly containing Sompong’s body, out of the victim’s condominium, resulting in his arrest.
Police said Patphum claimed that after he met Sompong at a public park, Sompong agreed to pay him Bt30,000 a month and bought him an iPhone 6, resulting in Patphum moving into the older man’s condominium on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road.
Police said that Patphum claimed he felt pressured after Sompong forced him to always walk beside him when in public, eat at the same time as him and show him affection in public.
Patphum allegedly argued with Sompong over the latter’s wish to take him to a party and it escalated into the assault and murder of Sompong.
The younger man allegedly disposed of the body in Wat Kaew Pitak Charoentham’s garbage furnace after dousing the body and four car tyres with gasoline and setting them alight.
Patphum was charged with murder, disposing of and destroying a body to conceal crime, theft, and using a stolen ATM or credit card.
He was brought to re-enact the crime at three locations yesterday – the temple, a Bang Chak gas station where he allegedly bought gasoline, and the victim’s condominium.
The re-enactment was cancelled at the third location after Patphum passed out.
