NLD celebrates Suu Kyi's birthday

A ceremony to celebrate the 71st birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s preeminent democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, was held at the National League for Democracy headquarters in Bahan Township on June 19 in conjunction with the opening of the party’s new headquarters.

 

Party members offered alms to members of the Sangha to mark the opening of the party’s new building, and the congregation received precepts from the monks. Thura Tin Oo, the patron of the NLD; Han Tha Myint, the secretariat member of the central executive committee; Phyoe Min Thein, the chief minister of Yangon Region and members of the public participated in the celebration.

 

In honour of Suu Kyi’s birthday, rice and provisions were donated to invited members of the Sangha and to nuns from several townships in Yangon Region.

 

At about 10am, Tin Oo led the celebration of the birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi together with NLD members, and the people present wished her long life.

 

“Today is the birthday of our leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the State Counsellor, who is loved by all. It is her 71st birthday, and it is really a historic one. All of us wish for her to maintain her physical and mental wellbeing in the future and to meet with success while carrying out her duties,” Tin Oo said.

 

Tin Oo, Nyan Win, NLD CEC members and Yangon Region parliament speaker Tin Maung Tun, presented certificates of honour to people who contributed to the construction of the new office building.

 

Tree-planting and blood-donation ceremonies were held in cooperation with the NLD and the public to mark the birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi in various townships.

 

Funds from the people were accepted to construct the new NLD headquarters in early 2014, and construction started in early April 2015.

 

The funds provided by the people to construct the new office building totalled more than K600 million, said Saw Hlaing, the financial in-charge.
