Two schools have students learn from Soi Dog

Two schools have students learn from Soi Dog

MAI KHAO, PHUKET - Two Thai schools have asked Soi Dog Foundation to teach their pupils about how to become more responsible citizens by getting involved with animal welfare projects.

During the past week, Soi Dog visited Kajonkietsuksa School in Phuket’s Khatu district, whilst thirty three children and their teachers from Cha-uat Wittayakarn School in Nakhon Si Thammarat visited the Soi Dog shelter in Mai Khao.
As part of their project to teach their pupils about community role models, good citizenry and becoming involved in community welfare, Kajonkietsuksa School arranged for Soi Dog to do a presentation about the organisation’s activities, and how the children could help the street dogs and cats in Thailand.
The event was thoroughly interacted and enjoyed by 110 third-graders who learned more about responsible ownership and care for their pets, as well as helping to care for street dogs and cats.
“The children enjoyed interacting with the Soi Dog representatives in English and learning about what Soi Dog does, and came away with great life lessons about what they each can do to help helpless animals, and thereby become role models of responsible citizenship within their own communities,” said Janine Cameron, from Kajonkietsuksa School.
“Further, the children also had great fun in their community raising funds and donations of food, blankets and toys which were accepted with thanks by Soi Dog for use at their shelter in Mai Khao.”
Cha-uat Wittayakarn School, from Nakhon Si Thammarat in Southern Thailand, also has a community outreach programme for their pupils. This year they reached out and supported two charity organisations, namely Child Watch Phuket (a legal NGO recognised for its dedication to assist and protect children, and guard children’s rights in Thailand) and Soi Dog Foundation. The children visited Patong where they interacted with visitors from across the world whilst raising funds and donations for both charities.
Nanlada Anong, head of the English Department from the school said that the project had two objectives.
“The first objective is for the children to learn how to become good citizens through community welfare projects, and the second objective is for them to learn to interact with foreigners in the English language whilst asking for donations for these worthwhile causes,” Nanlada said.
The children showed great character and commitment by raising substantial funds for both charities in terrible weather conditions in Patong, after which they visited the Soi Dog shelter in Mai Khao.
During the visit to the shelter, children asked and answered questions with their tour guides in English, learned more about the street dogs and cats in Thailand, and how they could care for and help these animals in their own communities.
Nanlada also handed over a substantial donation to Martin Turner, Managing Director of Soi Dog who thanked her and the children, and the party then left for the five hour trip back home.
Soi Dog Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2003, is a legally registered charity in Thailand, the United States, Australia, the UK, France and Holland.
